Huda lui Papară Cave

≈ 300 m from the guesthouse · longest cave in Trascău

The Huda lui Papară cave, in the Bedeleu massif

The cave opens in the Bedeleu wall, less than three hundred metres from the guesthouse. It is the longest cave in the Trascău Mountains, with over five kilometres of galleries cut into the limestone. A few of the chambers carry old names: the Hall of Wonders, the Hall of Silence, the Ludușan Labyrinth.

Three streams rising in the Ponor cliffs run into the mountain and meet again only on the far side, in Valea Morilor. Inside lives one of the largest bat colonies in Europe. The name comes from "hudă", an old word for a hole in the rock, a shelter. Zamolxis is said to have withdrawn into a cave in Trascău, perhaps this one.

You cannot go inside without a guide and gear, since flash floods make the route dangerous. The path to the cave mouth runs up a shaded valley and makes a short, cool walk straight from the guesthouse gate.
