Bedeleu Plateau
above the village · a day's hike
Bedeleu is the rock above the village, the limestone plateau the guesthouse sits under. It is the most imposing massif in the Trascău Mountains, ringed by sheer cliffs on three sides. Towards the Arieș, the wall drops between 150 and 250 metres.
On top, the plateau runs between 1,100 and 1,200 metres, with rounded ridges, dry valleys, and sinkholes. Huda lui Papară and Vânătările Ponorului both come down out of it, and the Poarta Zmeilor cave sits on the edge at about 1,150 metres. The massif is protected as part of the Natura 2000 Trascău sites.
You reach the plateau on the red-cross trail that links the Aiud Gorges to Sălciua, about fourteen kilometres and five to six hours of walking, with some real climbs. From the top, the view opens wide over the Apuseni.
