Scărița-Belioara

Muntele Mare

The Scărița-Belioara reserve, in Muntele Mare

Scărița-Belioara is a geo-botanical reserve in Muntele Mare, on the boundary between the villages of Ocoliș and Poșaga. It has a few spire-shaped peaks: Colțul Bleanțului, Piatra Belii and Vârful Negrilii. It also has many caves, from Peștera fără Fund to Peștera Roșie. Up on a plateau above 1,350 metres, edelweiss grows.

The reserve covers almost fifty hectares and shelters many rare plants. It has been protected since the 1920s, at the suggestion of the botanist Alexandru Borza. Above the Belioara valley the cliffs have vertical walls, ledges and sharp ridges, and the forest on Scărița mountain climbs up to meet them.

From Băișoara it is a mountain walk of about three hours. If you want, you can keep going, another three or so, all the way to Ocoliș.
