Vânătările Ponorului

at the foot of Bedeleu

Vânătările Ponorului, at the foot of the Bedeleu ridge

At the south-western edge of the Bedeleu ridge, three valleys (Ponorului, Seaca and Poieni) come together, sink into the limestone and carry on underground towards Huda lui Papară. The Poieni stream drops into the sinkhole from more than twenty-five metres. In winter, walls of ice build up around it, and after heavy rain the waterfall grows a lot.

The limestone wall in front is grey and white, streaked with dark stains left by the water running down it. That is where the name comes from. A network of water always runs across the flat floor, draining away under the mountain. When it rains hard, the water cannot leave fast enough and gathers into a lake. At some point the lake breaks through the natural dam and sends floods into the cave.

People here once could not explain what was happening, so they blamed the place for the tales of dragons hidden in the Huda. The trail marked with a blue cross carries on towards Valea Poieni and, in five or six hours, reaches the Râmeț Gorge.
